Beware - Right to Buy Scam

Tenants' representatives have alerted us to a door step scam involving Council and Housing Association tenants.

We have received reports that sales teams operating in housing estates are advising tenants that they may lose their Right to Buy. This is a scam. Private companies involved in this activity are preying on vulnerable people. In previous scams people have been charged to find out their own Right to Buy entitlement - something which can be found out for free by contacting your landlord. Some scams also involve persuading people to agree to expensive finance deals to buy their homes, which in many cases can quickly become unaffordable. This can lead to repossession and losing your home.

Remind your neighbours - Sitting tenants will not lose their Right to Buy. The Housing Bill going through parliament will not take away the sitting tenant's Right to Buy. Don't take advice from door step callers, if a tenant wants to buy their home, they should contact their landlord first for free information and advice.
